Later this year marks thirty years since I left the Air Force. I travelled the United States in a Chevy van in 1990, and then Australia in a Kombi camper in 1991. It was in Yass, NSW, in early 1991 that I decided I would become a teacher. I remember making the decision while drinking coffee in the back of the Kombi, beside a park near the centre of town. There was no mobile phone or internet available back then, so I called the University from a phone booth in the following weeks and asked them to send the appropriate forms to the Adelaide Post Office, from where I collected them. I then posted the completed forms from Darwin a couple of months later. I marked that significant sequence of events in Yass this morning, when I stopped for a coffee at the same park. This time, however, I decided to stay retired.
